CALL FOR PAPERS
The study of diplomatic language lies at the crossroads of the social
sciences--combining aspects of international relations, communication,
linguistics, psychology, anthropology, history, law and political
science. Its analysis employs methodologies, both qualitative and
quantitative, that are rapidly evolving. The Journal of Diplomatic
Language aims to provide a quarterly, internet-based forum for timely
publication of academic-quality manuscripts that will foster
development of more sophisticated conceptual frameworks and
methodological techniques within this inherently interdisciplinary field.
We therefore invite submissions from prospective authors of relatively-short technical
and/or conceptual papers, that critically analyze some aspect of
diplomatic language in a systematic and innovative manner. We are open
to contributions spanning the entire range of topics relevant to
studies of political language and diplomacy. Research reports or
thinkpieces that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries are
especially encouraged. As with any refereed academic journal,
submitted papers will be evaluated through a process of peer review on
the basis of quality, theoretical importance, originality, relevance to
a broad cross-disciplinary audience, and clarity of presentation.
Papers may present results from completed research, as well as report
on current research, with an emphasis on novel approaches, methods,
ideas, and perspectives.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTED MANUSCRIPTS (Articles, Research Reports, Book and Software Reviews) E-mail and Word Processing Conventions Rich Text (.rtf) or ASCII Text (.txt) format is strongly preferred. Please attach all files (the cover page, the abstract, the article manuscript, and any table/graphics files) to e-mails, which should be addressed to BOTH of the Editors-in-Chief. You should send a separate email + attachment for each manuscript component, rather than trying to include all of them in one email (which is likely to overload the editors' e-mailboxes, resulting in delayed processing of your submission.) Cover Page Since manuscripts are sent out anonymously for editorial review, the author's name(s), postal address(es), email address(es), and a brief biosketch (one for each author), together with the title of the article, must appear on a separate cover page which can be readily detached. Do not attach any identifying information (other than title of article) to either the abstract or the body of the manuscript. Abstracts Abstracts should be 400 words or less and contain an encapsulated summary of the topic addressed, including a concise statement of the central ideas, methods, and results of the research. (In the case of book reviews, no abstract is required.) Article Manuscripts Authors should direct their manuscripts of up to 5000 words to the Editors-in-Chief, via e-mail. Each submission will then be assigned to an appropriate member of the Editorial Board to manage the review process. The paper format and citations should conform to standard APA style, as outlined below. If accepted for publication, authors will generally have one to two weeks to make any required revisions suggested by the reviewers--if the article is to be published in the next issue. Graphics Where relevant, include separate files for photos, line illustrations, and charts as e-mail attachments (sent one at a time). Note that .gif or .jpg files are strongly preferred, so if possible all graphics should be prepared in, or converted to, one of these file types. APA Style, and Citations The APA style calls for three kinds of information to be included in in-text citations. The author's last name and the work's date of publication must always appear, and these items must match exactly the corresponding entry in the references list. The third kind of information, the page number, appears only in a citation to a direct quotation. All authors cited in the text must appear in the references list, and all authors listed must have been cited in the text. The following web site provides guidelines on how to use parenthetical citations to cite original sources in the text of your paper. These guidelines summarize the essential information needed in parenthetical citations, and also provide details on how to format the reference list properly.
